"Chalkbeat is not just telling a series of anecdotes, or stories that fit into this larger negative narrative...I think in some ways Chalkbeat humanizes schools.” - Cornelia Grumman, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Columbia Journalism Review
We are living in a time of rapid transformation in public education, and when the local news industry that should help us make sense of the immense change has been upended.
We are on a mission to create a reliable source of the news our democracy urgently needs: local coverage of public education, with a focus on communities that have historically lacked access to a quality education.
Chalkbeat’s mission is to provide deep, local coverage of education policy and practice to inform the decisions and actions that lead to better outcomes for children and families, especially those in low-income communities.
